Monday 28 March – Port Victoria, Mahe,
Seychelles
We
are on tour so had an early breakfast and then went onto the Sun Deck to watch us arrive. Most tours seem to go early - possibly before the heat becomes too much. The
weather was a bit overcast but very hot and extremely humid.
The
first stop of our tour was at the Botanic gardens where we were taken round to see the famous Coco de Mer palms among other species such as Elephant Apple, Star Fruit, Frangipane and Giant Water Lilies. Among the shrubs were Seychelles Sunbirds while flying overhead were large Fruit Bats - a Seychelles delicacy I have since learned! There was a large enclosure with the iconic Giant Tortoises.

Next we drove to the main
town of Port Victoria to see the famous miniature version of Big Ben, a stunning Hindu temple
and the fresh produce market.
You can’t visit the Seychelles without going to a
beach so that was next on our itinerary. The beach belonged to an hotel, so we
all got a cool drink first and then walked onto the soft, pale sand, lapped by
the warm gentle waters of the Indian Ocean.
After this refreshing interlude it was time to return
to the ship, after browsing the stalls on the dockside of course, where I bought a batik blouse and shell pendant.
