Oriana - In Search of the Northern Lights 4

Tuesday 18 March – Tromsø

We woke up to find thick snow on the deck. We had breakfast in the Conservatory before heading to the deck to watch the most wonderful sail-in in perfect weather. It was very cold but the landscapes all around were stunning - high mountains with snow-covered slopes and tiny settlements at the bases.

We arrived at noon so had a quick brunch and then caught the shuttle bus into the centre. It was a short walk to the shop to buy a bus ticket for the No.26 to the Cable Car station. The views from the top were once again stunning – the whole town was laid out before us in the snow. The Hurtigruten ship Midnatsol was in port as well as Oriana.

After a while enjoying the views and sun, we then caught the bus back to the Arctic Cathedral.

We then boarded the bus again to return to the town. As we walked past the old Cathedral we spotted a friend. I wanted a photo shop for a spare camera card so we went into one close to the Cathedral before going back to the shuttle bus and ship.

Dinner was open seating in two sittings. We went in early before dressing up again and going out on the foredeck. I was just getting the lift when someone told me the Northern Lights were visible. Just then there was an announcement from the bridge to that effect. I got some reasonable photos but the light pollution was such that they were dimmed. We got to bed at midnight.
