Oriana - Day 16 - Katakolon

Day 16 Katakolon

The seas were a little bumpy overnight but are calm now. This is my second time here so have opted for a tour to Olympia as last time I stayed in the town. It was a 35 minute drive to the site, through olive groves and farmland. Once there our guide led us through the archaeological excavations, giving overlong and repetitive accounts of what we were looking at- plenty of time then to wander off and take photos away from the groups!.
The sky was a clear blue and birds sang in the trees. The ground was covered with a thick layer of autumn-coloured oak leaves and the morning was utterly lovely. I had not realised quite what a large site this was, as usually you only see the stadium part. Once we entered through the tunnel of the athletes and trainers, we had some free time so I walked the length of the track.
At each end there were the marble starting lines but a good few metres from the far end was a line of stones – looking like the foundation for a wall or something. I asked the guide what it was and after first denying it existed, and then changing the subject, we (because by then there were several of us asking) gave up. Hopefully I will find out in a book as I suspect the guide hadn’t even noticed or walked that far! Then it was time to visit the museum on site. There were stunning artefacts and finds displayed there, including a huge marble statue of Hermes.
On our way back, the coach dropped those who wished off at the end of town. Caryll and I got off and after taking photos of Oriana from the Marina, walked back slowly through the town and back to the ship. We were in the opposite berth to that on Oceana last year so it was quite a trek back.
